20 Games In… A Shifting Identity

So what have we learned after 20 games?

• The team didn’t completely shit the bed in the first quarter of the season like the previous two. Whooo! Never forget that it wasn’t until Thanksgiving that Ruutu unveiled his sick shootout move to cap a wild come from behind win in Ottawa that turned the season north.

By the way, what the fuck is wrong with Rutuu now? Sure he always chirped and maybe threw an odd elbow here and there over the last two seasons in Pittsburgh but in Ottawa he’s been straight up dirty. You hate to see them turn out like that.

• The power play is a mess. Anyone who doubts the ability of Sergei Gonchar should be forced to study our sub-20% PP for the rest of time. Bottom line: the top unit needs someone at the point who both dictates the play and takes his shot when appropriate. As good as Letang and Gogol Bordello have played, either have that skill. Few do. I don’t have it. You don’t have it. Malkin has it every once and a while but he seems to feel more comfortable down low.

Let’s hope Mr. Boucher gels with the talent.

• Our GM is a wheelin’ dealin’ kiss stealin’ son of bitch. Zigomanis has been crucial and none of the big off-season loses seem all that important now. Sure it’d be nice to have Hossa, but it’s also nice to see Staal start blossoming and have the cap room to re-sign him.

Hey there Malone. I confess, of all the shit teams that I find myself watching on Center Ice, the Tampa Bay Lightning are my favorite. It’s like watching a ghostly apparition of Penguins teams past play teams of the present. I feel like the Pens should be credited with .01 of a point for every game the Bolts win this season.
